A Felicidade, meaning Happiness, is a bossa nova tune composed in 1958 by Antonio Carlos Jobim with lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes for the French film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus). The song’s theme is the fragility of happiness, beginning with the line Tristeza não tem fim. Felicidade sim, and in the film it was performed by Agostinho dos Santos with Roberto Menescal on guitar during the opening credits. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing worldwide attention to Jobim, Moraes and the bossa nova movement. A French version with lyrics by André Salvet titled Adieu tristesse and an Italian version with lyrics by Mario Panzeri titled Felicità exist. The tune has been recorded by many artists, including João Gilberto and Jobim himself, and remains a landmark work in the bossa nova repertoire.
