Afro-Centric is an original Joe Henderson composition and the second track on Power to the People, his 1969 Milestone album. The album was recorded in May 1969 at Plaza Sound Studios in New York City and released the same year, blending jazz with hard bop and post-bop sensibilities. On Afro-Centric, Henderson is joined by Mike Lawrence on trumpet on select tracks, Herbie Hancock on Fender Rhodes, Ron Carter on electric bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Hancock’s Fender Rhodes and Carter’s electric bass mark the first electric instruments to appear on a Henderson album. The track runs about seven minutes and showcases the dynamic, exploratory interplay of the group.
