Ahmid-6 is a jazz instrumental with a storied lineage. It was originally recorded by Bob Berg on his 1994 album Riddles. The tune reappears on Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau’s 2006 collaboration Metheny Mehldau, released by Nonesuch. On that album, Ahmid-6 is performed as a guitar-and-piano duet by Metheny and Mehldau, with the other two musicians joining on different tracks like Ring of Life and Say the Brother’s Name. The track runs 6 minutes and 35 seconds and sits squarely in the jazz genre, showcasing Metheny’s versatile guitar textures and Mehldau’s lyrical piano voice, and it recalls the intimate chemistry of the 1960s Jim Hall/Bill Evans Undercurrent.
