Always on My Mind is a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher and Mark James. It was first recorded by Brenda Lee and first released by Gwen McCrae as You Were Always on My Mind in March 1972; Brenda Lee’s version appeared on the album Brenda and was issued as a single later that year. The song crossed between country and pop, and Elvis Presley recorded a notable version in 1972 that helped popularize it. Willie Nelson’s 1982 version from the album Always on My Mind became a major hit, topping the country chart and winning three Grammys for the songwriters and Nelson. A hi-NRG cover by the Pet Shop Boys reached number one in the UK in 1987, and there are more than 300 recorded versions of the tune.
