As Time Goes By is a jazz standard written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931 for the Broadway musical Everybody’s Welcome. The original stage performer was Frances Williams, and Rudy Vallée made the first commercial recording on July 25, 1931. The tune became famous for its use in the 1942 film Casablanca, where Dooley Wilson sings it as Sam with piano accompaniment by a studio pianist. In Casablanca the song is heard as a recurring leitmotif and the performance is often cited as the version most people remember. It has been covered by numerous artists including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, and Bryan Ferry, and it remains a nostalgic reflection in film and popular culture. AFI named it No. 2 on its 100 Years...100 Songs list, and since 1999 instrumental closing bars of the tune have accompanied Warner Bros studio logos.
