Bags & Trane is a jazz studio album by vibraphonist Milt Jackson and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. The title track, Bags & Trane, was written by Jackson, and the record captures a rare collaboration between the two—though it sits mainly in Jackson’s discography. It was recorded January 15, 1959 at Atlantic Studios in New York and released in mid July 1961 on Atlantic Records. The album is rooted in the hard bop style and features Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Although Coltrane’s name is prominently displayed, the session is largely a Jackson-led project with Coltrane contributing to the iconic opening track and the ensemble handling the rest. The original LP includes five tracks: Bags & Trane, Three Little Words, The Night We Called It a Day, Be-Bop, and The Late Late Blues, with many reissues adding bonus material from the same session or related sessions.
