Batida Diferente, or A Different Beat, is a jazz and Brazilian bossa nova tune originally written by Durval Ferreira and Maurício Einhorn. It was first released in December 1962 on the Tamba Trio recording, and later appeared on Durval Ferreira’s 2004 Guanabara Records album Batida Diferente. The piece has become a Brazilian jazz standard, known for its cool arrangements and contributions by various players. A Washington DC area quartet also named Batida Diferente borrows the title from the 1960s classic and performs originals, jazz classics with new lyrics, and fresh takes on off the beaten track material. The group’s lineup includes Kim Scudera on vocals, Rob Orwin on keyboards and winds, Jody Myers on bass, and Mike Wingo on drums and percussion.
