Be-Bop is a landmark bebop tune written by Dizzy Gillespie. It was first recorded on January 9, 1945 by Gillespie with Trummy Young, Don Byas, Clyde Hart, Oscar Pettiford and Shelly Mane, and it helped launch the bebop era. The track appears on the album Jazz Gallery, Dizzy Gillespie, CD 1, released by BMG/Makin’ Friends Records. The piece is in F minor, in 4/4 time with a swing groove, and runs about 79 seconds in that recording, featuring three choruses over 96 bars. Be-Bop remains a defining example of early bebop with rapid, virtuosic trumpet lines and intricate chord changes.
