Beijo Partido, translated as Broken Kiss, is a Brazilian MPB tune written by Toninho Horta in 1973 with lyrics added in 1975. The music grew from a personal heartbreak, featuring Horta’s simple melodic line backed by intricate harmony. It was first recorded by Nana Caymmi for her 1975 album Nana Caymmi, and soon after by Milton Nascimento on Minas (also 1975), with Horta playing guitar and piano and providing backing vocals on Milton’s version. The song is tied to the Clube da Esquina movement from Belo Horizonte and showcases Horta’s distinctive, harmonically rich style while telling a story of lost love and a broken kiss.
