Bewitched (Bothered and Bewildered) is a show tune from the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey and is now a staple of the Great American Songbook. It was introduced by Vivienne Segal on Broadway in December 1940 and published in 1941. The lyrics express being swept off one's feet by love, leaving the singer bewitched, bothered and bewildered. The song has many famous early recordings, including Doris Day's 1949 version which reached No 9 on the charts, plus other hits by Gordon Jenkins, Jan August, Larry Green and Mel Tormé. In 2003 Rod Stewart and Cher released a duet on As Time Goes By: The Great American Songbook Volume II, which charted on the US Adult Contemporary list. Today it remains a popular jazz and standards piece performed in theatre and on recordings.
