Blue Moon is a 1934 popular song written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, published by Robbins Music. It was first recorded by Ted Fio Rito with Muzzy Marcellino on vocals and grew out of MGM film work, with early versions by Connee Boswell and Al Bowlly. The tune became a standard ballad and had renewed hits in 1949 by Billy Eckstine and Mel Tormé. The Marcels’ 1961 doo-wop version from the album Blue Moon topped the US and UK charts and is recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll; an instrumental version by the Ventures also charted that year. Elvis Presley released a rock and roll take on his debut album Elvis Presley in 1956 after recording it in 1954. Over the years it has been covered by many artists and it even serves as the anthem for Manchester City football club.
