Blues in the Closet is a jazz instrumental composition credited to Oscar Pettiford, with co credit to Harry Babasin and sometimes known as Collard Greens and Black Eyed Peas. It was first recorded by Oscar Pettiford and His Jazz All Stars in June 1953 and released in 1954. The tune has become a jazz standard from the bebop era and has appeared on albums titled Blues in the Closet, such as Bud Powell’s 1956 release and Tommy Flanagan’s 1983 release. The piece is noted for its swinging bass lines and intricate, fast melodies typical of postwar jazz. Many artists have recorded versions over the years, including Bud Powell Trio (1958) and Chet Baker Sextet (1962), among others.
