Brown Eyed Girl is a 1967 soft rock - pop rock single by Northern Irish singer Van Morrison. It was recorded in a two day session starting March 28, 1967 at A & R Studios in New York City and released in June 1967 on Bang Records, later appearing as the lead track on the album Blowin' Your Mind! The lyrics nostalgically describe a former love and childhood memories, and the title was originally Brown-Skinned Girl before Morrison changed it by accident. The Sweet Inspirations provided backing vocals, and the song peaked at No 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending sixteen weeks on the chart. It is widely considered Morrison's signature song and helped launch his solo career after leaving the band Them. Over the years it has been widely covered and recognized, including a 1972 version by El Chicano, and it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007; BMI noted ten million US radio plays by 2011.
