Celia is a jaunty bebop tune composed by Bud Powell. It was recorded with Ray Brown on bass and Max Roach on drums in 1949 and 1950, and first released on the Bud Powell album Jazz Giant in 1950. The tune showcases Powell's bebop construction - with a brisk melodic line and driving rhythm - beginning with a pedal on F, the V chord of Bb, and staying in Bb in the A-section, while using sister chords and a tri-tone substitution back to the tonic. In the B-section the harmony briefly moves away from the tonic before returning to the V to rejoin the A-section. Celia is often described as a cheerful, optimistic bebop number and stands as a strong example of Powell's bebop piano writing.
