It was first released as an instrumental by Herbie Hancock in September 1986. Stevie Wonder contributed lyrics for vocal versions, with a notable 1987 recording by Dianne Reeves. Since then the tune has been covered many times by a wide range of jazz artists. The collaboration helped Hancock win the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Round Midnight.
