Chant is a Duke Pearson composed jazz tune performed by Donald Byrd - it appears on a 1961 Blue Note session that produced the album Chant. The track is a hard bop piece of about 8 minutes, featuring Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Herbie Hancock on piano in his Blue Note debut, Doug Watkins on bass, and Eddy Robinson on drums. It was recorded April 17, 1961 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and produced by Alfred Lion. Although the session was recorded in 1961, the album Chant was not released by Blue Note until 1979. The tune Chant was first released by Donald Byrd in February 1964, and Byrd later revisited the composition on his 1964 album A New Perspective with a choir. The piece remains a notable example of early 60s hard bop and has been revived in Blue Note’s Tone Poet reissues.
