Cheek to Cheek is a 1934–35 Irving Berlin song written for Fred Astaire in the musical Top Hat, where Astaire sings it to Ginger Rogers as they dance. Published July 2, 1935 and released August 1935, it was recorded June 26, 1935 at ARC Recording Studios in New York City with Fred Astaire and Leo Reisman's Orchestra. The jazz–pop tune runs about 3 minutes 19 seconds and was issued on Brunswick 7486. In the film the number appears as the climactic dance, and the song became a major hit, spending five weeks at number one on Your Hit Parade and being named the number one song of 1935. It was nominated for Best Song at the 1936 Oscars; Astaire’s 1935 recording with Leo Reisman’s Orchestra was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000, and in 2004 it ranked No. 15 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs. The melody nods to Chopin's Polonaise héroïque, and since its creation it has been recorded by hundreds of artists (about 438 versions noted by July 2021).
