Clair de lune is a French gypsy jazz tune written by Joseph Kosma with lyrics by Jacques Prévert for the film La Fleur de l’Age. The first recording was by Django Reinhardt in April 1947, and the piece has since appeared on various releases in the Gypsy Jazz tradition. The original performance is in Ebm, though many modern versions are played in Dm. It has become a standard of the Gypsy Jazz or Jazz Manouche repertoire and has been covered by many artists, including the Schnuckenack Reinhardt Quintet, appearing on German Gypsy Music compilations in the 1990s. This Clair de lune is a distinct Kosma composition from Debussy’s Clair de Lune, linked to film music and the Kosma-Prevert legacy.
