Começar de Novo, known in English as The Island, is a jazz tune written by Brazilian composers Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins. It was first released in 1979 by Simone on the album Começar de Novo. The English version, with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, is The Island and appeared in 1981 on Patti Austin’s album The Island, produced by Quincy Jones. The song has since become a jazz standard, covered by many artists, including Lori Williams on her album Behind the Smiles. Ivan Lins, one of the most recorded Brazilian artists, is noted for his refined harmonies and innovative arrangements that cross Brazilian music with American jazz.
