Contemplation is a jazz piano tune written by McCoy Tyner. It first appeared on the 1967 album The Real McCoy, released on Impulse! Records, with Tyner leading a quartet that includes Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The piece is a meditative, modal hard bop composition that showcases Tyner’s bold piano voicings and rich harmonic textures. It is considered a highlight of Tyner’s 1960s modern jazz period. A later recording appears on the 2003 Telarc release Land Of Giants featuring Bobby Hutcherson, Charnett Moffett, and Eric Harland. The track exemplifies Tyner’s influence on post-bop jazz and remains a favorite in his catalog.
