Coucou is a 1940 jazz tune by Django Reinhardt and the Nouveau Quintet of the Hot Club de France. It was recorded in Paris on October 1, 1940 and features Django on guitar, Hubert Rostaing on clarinet, Josette Daydé on vocal, Joseph Reinhardt on rhythm guitar, Pierre Fouad on drums, and Francis Luca on bass. The music was composed by A. Mathas with lyrics by Jean Féline, and this is the Quintet’s only vocal collaboration with Daydé, who joined the group for a two week engagement at the Normandie venue. The arrangement is credited to Django. The lyrics evoke spring and awakening, and Django’s solo is often noted as happy and buoyant. Genre: jazz, swing, gypsy jazz. The tune appears in Django Reinhardt’s 1940 Paris recordings and is not tied to a specific named album in the sources.
