Darn That Dream is a 1939 jazz standard composed by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Eddie DeLange. It was introduced in the Broadway musical Swingin' the Dream, a New Orleans set variation on A Midsummer Night's Dream that opened in 1939. The song’s big break came from Benny Goodman’s 1940 recording, arranged by Eddie Sauter with Mildred Bailey on vocals, which reached number one. In 1940 other popular versions appeared by Blue Barron & His Orchestra with Russ Carlyle and by Tommy Dorsey with Anita Boyer. A staple of the jazz repertoire, Darn That Dream has been covered by many artists including Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Stan Kenton, Thelonious Monk, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan, and it is typically performed in the key of G major. It has appeared on numerous albums and compilations, with notable later renditions by Tony Bennett on Cloud 7 (1955) and Doris Day as a single in 1950.
