Diane is a 1927 song composed by Ernő Rapée and Lew Pollack, written as the theme for the silent film 7th Heaven. It is a graceful waltz that was introduced in the movie and first theatrically released by James Melton on May 6, 1927. The tune quickly became a popular standard with early 1928 hit versions by the Nat Shilkret Orchestra, Nathan Glantz, and Franklyn Baur. In 1964 The Bachelors released a Decca single of Diane that topped the UK charts and reached number 10 in the US, making them the first Irish act to have a UK number one single. The song entered the public domain on January 1, 2023. Note that the title is sometimes read as My Diane and it is not related to the Beach Boys song My Diane. It remains a frequently covered standard, often appearing in medleys and cross genre arrangements.
