Dig is a Miles Davis composition that opens the 1956 Prestige compilation Dig. The tracks come from a 1951 session recorded on October 5, 1951 at Apex Studios in New York, as Davis moved from the Birth of the Cool era toward hard bop. The album Dig, also issued as Diggin' with the Miles Davis Sextet, was Davis's first 12-inch LP release and features Miles Davis on trumpet, Jackie McLean making his recording debut on alto sax (on tracks 1, 3-5), Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Walter Bishop Jr. on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The original LP runs about 34 minutes and includes Dig, It's Only a Paper Moon, and Denial on side one with Bluing and Out of the Blue on side two; the CD reissue adds further tracks such as My Old Flame and Conception. The release was produced by Bob Weinstock for Prestige Records.
