Charles Mingus’s Duke Ellington's Sound of Love is a lyrical tribute to Ellington’s ballad tradition, reimagined in Mingus’s distinctive style. It first appeared on the 1974 Mingus album Changes One, with Don Pullen on piano, and has since become a popular big band chart featuring lush ensemble writing and an optional flute or piano solo in Hal Leonard’s Simply Mingus edition (arr. Homzy). The tune has been released in several big band versions, including Jack Walrath’s HL-7010240 edition of the Mingus Big Band arrangement and Eric Richards’s arrangement performed by the Reno Jazz Orchestra.
