Easy Does It is a swing era jazz tune written by Sy Oliver and Trummy Young. The original recording and first release were by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra in 1939 - recorded October 25, 1939 and released December 8, 1939. The piece is a 24-bar A-B-A form with three eight-bar segments and a minimal melody that invites inventive solos. A notable early version was Count Basie and His Orchestra, recorded for Columbia in March 1940 and released in April 1940 - arranged by Jimmy Mundy. Basie's performance features Lester Young on tenor and Buck Clayton on trumpet, with a striking modulation from F to D-flat leading into Young's long solo and Sweets Edison on muted trumpet. Since then many big bands and jazz pianists have covered it, making Easy Does It a swing and jazz standard.
