Ecaroh is a haunting hard bop tune composed by Horace Silver. It was first recorded by The Horace Silver Trio in 1952 and released in March 1953. A second version appears on the Jazz Messengers’ debut album in 1956, and the tune has since been covered many times on dozens of records. The piece is known for its tense chords, including sharp nine and sharp eleven ideas, and for Silver’s bluesy minor pentatonic improv and his distinctive left-hand growl. Jazz Wax describes Ecaroh as shifting between major and minor keys with a mildly Latin intro, building drama and mystery, and it has become a jazz standard with numerous interpretations by a wide range of artists.
