Embraceable You is a jazz standard composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It was written in 1928 for an unpublished operetta called East Is West, published in 1930, and later featured in the Broadway musical Girl Crazy. The song was introduced by Ginger Rogers in Girl Crazy, in a number choreographed by Fred Astaire. Since then it has become a staple of the American songbook and has been recorded by many artists. Notable versions include Billie Holiday's 1944 recording, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2005, Nat King Cole's 1943 version, Bing Crosby's 1947 recording, and Ella Fitzgerald's 1959 George and Ira Gershwin Songbook performance. It remains a popular jazz standard and show tune across generations.
