Estate - Summer is an Italian song written in 1960 by Bruno Martino (music) and Bruno Brighetti (lyrics). It was first released in 1960 with Bruno Martino conducting Ib Glindemann's Orchestra, and it initially had only modest success in Italy. It later grew into a worldwide jazz standard, recorded by many singers and instrumentalists such as Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, and João Gilberto. The title refers to summer, and the lyrics describe a love lost in the season and the bitter memories that linger. The João Gilberto version on the Amoroso album (1976) helped popularize the tune in a Brazilian-inflected arrangement. Bruno Martino, born November 11, 1925, began his career in 1944 with the RAI radio symphony orchestra, later leading a prominent Italian ballroom orchestra that blended jazz with Neapolitan folk influences. The song was originally titled Odio l’estate, meaning I hate the summer, before becoming known simply as Estate.
