Everybody Needs Somebody to Love is a soul infused rhythm and blues tune originally performed by Solomon Burke. It was released as a single in July 1964 on Atlantic Records and later appeared on Burke’s compilation The Best Of Solomon Burke (1965). Co-written by Solomon Burke, Bert Berns (also known as Bert Russell) and Jerry Wexler, the song is a joyful ode to the virtues of the one you love, with a church‑march inspired riff that became a signature hook. Burke, a pioneer of soul and country, helped pave the way for Atlantic’s next wave of soul stars; the Rolling Stones covered the track on their 1965 album The Rolling Stones Now! Burke even opened for the Stones in Los Angeles in 2002. The Blues Brothers performed it for the 1980 film of the same name. In the US, Burke’s original peaked around 58 on the charts.
