Fantasy in D, also known as Ugetsu, is a Cedar Walton composition that became a Jazz Messengers favorite. Written in D major, it gained fame on Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers’ 1963 album Ugetsu, a live set recorded after their Japan tour as a tribute to that visit. Walton later released the tune on his own albums under the title Fantasy in D, sometimes listed as Phantasy in D, which has led to some labeling confusion. The track is a hard bop / post-bop piece known for its energetic tempo and bright horn lines.
