First Song is a 1992 jazz studio album by American bassist Charlie Haden, released on the Italian Soul Note label. It was recorded in Milan on April 26, 1990, with pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and drummer Billy Higgins, and it blends Haden and Pieranunzi originals with jazz standards. The title track First Song is an original by Haden, and the collection includes pieces such as Je Ne Sais Quoi, Polka Dots and Moonbeams, Lennie’s Pennies, News Break, All the Way, Si Si, For Turiya, and In the Moment. A notable personal thread behind the tune, according to Haden, is that First Song was the first song he wrote for his wife Ruth, later first recorded with Quartet West on In Angel City in 1988. The album sits between Dialogues (1990) and Haunted Heart (1992) in Haden’s discography and is regarded as a solid, lyrical entry in modern jazz.
