Fly Me to the Moon, originally titled In Other Words, is a 1954 jazz song written by Bart Howard. It was first recorded that year by Kaye Ballard and released on the Decca label. The tune quickly became a jazz standard and has been recorded by many artists. A 1964 version by Frank Sinatra helped popularize it and it became closely associated with the Apollo Moon missions. In 1999 the Songwriters Hall of Fame named Fly Me to the Moon a Towering Song for its lasting cultural impact. Bart Howard, a pianist and cabaret performer, wrote the piece after a publisher asked for a simpler song; he refused to change the lyric from fly me to the moon to take me to the moon, and later joked that he had spent years pursuing music before finishing the song in about 20 minutes. The track is about 2 minutes and 14 seconds long and is categorized as jazz.
