For Heaven's Sake is a mid-1940s jazz standard written by Elise Bretton, Sherman Edwards and Don Meyer. It was first recorded by Claude Thornhill and His Orchestra with Fran Warren on vocals in December 1947 and released as a single in June 1948. The song, rooted in the big band era, is a melodic vocal jazz ballad that has since become a widely covered standard, with notable recordings by Billie Holiday (1958), Tony Bennett (1960), Abbey Lincoln (1992) and Grover Washington Jr. (1994) among many others. The original sheet music was published in 1946 by Duchess Music Corporation.
