Honeysuckle Rose is a 1929 jazz standard composed by Fats Waller with lyrics by Andy Razaf. It was introduced by Waller in the 1929 Off-Broadway revue Load of Coal at Connie's Inn as a soft-shoe dance number. Waller wrote the tune in 1928 during a visit to Asbury Park, New Jersey, at 119 Atkins Avenue. The first recording was Bert Stock and His Orchestra in November 1929, and Waller’s own 1934 recording later became iconic and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The song is a swing-jazz standard that has been recorded by many artists, including Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan. A notable album appearance is Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie’s 1963 album Ella and Basie!, which helped cement Honeysuckle Rose as a timeless jazz classic.
