Human is a 2008 song by The Killers, released as the first single from their third album Day & Age. It blends dance-rock, synth-pop and new wave, and was co-produced by Stuart Price alongside the band. Written by Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci Jr, the track has Flowers describing it as Johnny Cash meets the Pet Shop Boys. Its chorus asks Are we human or are we dancer, a line linked to Hunter S. Thompson’s critique of conformity which sparked debate about its meaning. The song reached the UK top five and peaked at number two in the Netherlands, among other chart successes, and its video was filmed in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah. The B-side is A Crippling Blow, and a seven-inch picture disc was released worldwide in 2008. Critics praised its production and influences, and Rolling Stone readers later named it Best Song of 2008; there are also remixes by Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten.
