I Only Have Eyes for You is a 1934 jazz standard written by Harry Warren with lyrics by Al Dubin for the film Dames, where it was first performed by Dick Powell. In 1934 other popular versions appeared by Ben Selvin, Eddy Duchin, and Jane Froman. The tune gained enduring fame with The Flamingos’ 1959 doo-wop rendition from the album Flamingo Serenade, recorded in 1958 and released in May 1959. The Flamingos version mixes doo-wop, pop and early rock and roll, runs about 3:20, and reached the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 11, the R&B chart at number 3, and Canada at number 7; it features a floating counter-melody, a distinctive Russian-inspired refrain, and heavy reverb. The track is regarded as a classic, later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003 and listed by Rolling Stone among the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Art Garfunkel issued a 1975 soft rock cover from the Breakaway album, which topped the UK singles chart for two weeks and reached number 18 on the US Hot 100 and number 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart.
