I Shot the Sheriff is a reggae song written by Bob Marley and performed by Bob Marley and the Wailers. It was released in 1973 on the album Burnin' and is told from a narrator’s perspective who says he shot the sheriff and claims self defense after the sheriff tries to kill him. The track was recorded at Harry J Studio in Kingston, Jamaica and produced by Chris Blackwell and The Wailers. Eric Clapton covered the song in 1974 on the album 461 Ocean Boulevard; his blues rock version reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003. In 1997 Warren G released a hip hop version as the lead single from Take a Look Over Your Shoulder; it peaked at number 20 on the US charts and was certified Gold, also hitting high positions in the UK and New Zealand.
