Impromptu is a fast, bebop-influenced instrumental by Django Reinhardt. The story behind it recalls a young bebop pianist, Hubert Fol, visiting Django at Le Bourget with a proposal, and Django dusting off his Selmer to join the session at Club Saint-Germain. Back on stage with his latest quintet, he proved he was not past his prime, producing some of his best work from that period. Recorded at Club Saint-Germain, Impromptu is played at breakneck speed and is firmly bebop in orientation, though its opening harmonies hark back to the Hungarian Tzigane that Django would have heard in his youth. It was first released in 1952 by Django Reinhardt and His Quintet and remains a landmark example of the Gypsy Jazz and bebop fusion associated with his late career.
