In Pursuit of the 27th Man is the title track of Horace Silver’s jazz album In Pursuit of the 27th Man. The tune was recorded in 1972 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and the album was released in mid March 1973 on the Blue Note label. The piece runs 9 minutes 44 seconds and sits in a hard bop world with a funky soul edge. The album features two sessions: three tracks with Randy Brecker on trumpet and Michael Brecker on tenor sax, plus Bob Cranshaw and Mickey Roker, and four numbers with vibraphonist David Friedman leading a quartet with Silver, Cranshaw and Roker. It’s described as pure Horace Silver with a very driving melodic style and a distinctive unusual instrumentation for Silver. The project was produced by George Butler.
