In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening is a pop standard written by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was originally planned for a Paramount musical for Betty Hutton, The Mack Sennett Girl, but the project never happened and the song was rediscovered for the 1951 film Here Comes the Groom, where it was performed as a Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman duet. The tune won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1952. The original recording by Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman with Matty Matlock’s All Stars and the Four Hits and a Miss was recorded on June 20, 1951 and released by Decca as catalog 27678, entering the Billboard Best Seller chart on September 21, 1951 and peaking at number 11 over six weeks. The B side of the single was Misto Cristofo Columbo. The song is a light pop ballad and has been covered by many artists, later appearing on various albums and compilations, including Crosby and Fred Astaire’s A Couple of Song and Dance Men.
