In the Middle of a Kiss is a 1935 jazz swing pop tune written by Sam Coslow (lyrics and music). It was first recorded by Jan Garber and His Orchestra with a vocal by Lee Bennett, recorded in November 1934 and released in May 1935. The song appears in the Paramount musical College Scandals, where Johnny Downs and Arline Judge perform it on screen, and the sheet music was published by Famous Music Corporation. Coslow reportedly wrote it in about 35 minutes during a bet at a Hollywood party, inspired by a couple kissing on a terrace as a record ended. The tune has been covered by many artists and remains a notable 1930s song in the jazz and swing repertoire.
