In the Midnight Hour is a 1965 R&B-soul song by Wilson Pickett. Co-written by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, it was recorded at Stax Studios in Memphis on May 12, 1965 and released as the title track of the album In the Midnight Hour, later appearing on The Exciting Wilson Pickett (1966). Produced by Jim Stewart and Cropper for Atlantic, the 2 minute 30 second track features a punchy horn section and a distinctive delayed backbeat that helped define its groove. The single topped the R&B chart and peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is regarded as a landmark of soul and R&B and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and added to the National Recording Registry in 2017.
