It's Magic is a traditional pop tune written by Jule Styne with lyrics by Sammy Cahn for Doris Day in her Warner Brothers film debut Romance on the High Seas, which in the United Kingdom was retitled It's Magic after the song. The first recording was by Doris Day and Nestor Amaral in June 1947, and Day’s single with the orchestra conducted by George Siravo was released by Columbia (catalog 38188) in 1947–1948, peaking at number 2 on Billboard’s Retail Record Sales chart in September 1948. The song earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in 1949 but lost to Buttons and Bows. In 1952 Day made the tune the theme of her Hollywood radio series The Doris Day Show. It has since been covered by numerous artists, including Vic Damone, Tony Martin, Dick Haymes, Gordon MacRae, and Sarah Vaughan, and remains a hallmark of Day’s early career. The track is categorized as traditional pop and continues to be associated with the film’s soundtrack and Day’s enduring legacy.
