Jackie-ing is a Thelonious Monk composition captured during his 1961 European tour in Amsterdam. The release NJA1401 from Nederlands Jazz Archief combines a studio session from April 15, 1961 with a live Amsterdam date from May 20, 1961; the May concert is regarded as superior to the April material, and the studio portion makes up about 40 percent of the set. The group features Monk on piano, John Ore on bass, Frankie Dunlop on percussion, and Charlie Rouse on alto saxophone, and the program ends with two audience-requested piano solos, Body And Soul and Just A Gigolo. The recording sits in the jazz genre and reflects Monk’s inventive, ever-surprising approach. The collection was released around 2014–2015, and some of the April material had previously appeared on Solar’s Complete 1961 Amsterdam Concert and a Moon label release.
