Joy Spring is a 1954 jazz composition by Clifford Brown that became his signature tune. The title was Brown's pet name for his wife Larue. Brown first recorded it on August 6, 1954, at Capitol Recording Studios in Los Angeles with Harold Land, Richie Powell, George Morrow, and Max Roach. A second take with Jack Montrose's arrangement and different players was recorded on August 12, 1954 and appeared on several albums. It was released in December 1954 on the album Clifford Brown & Max Roach. The piece, in the jazz genre, runs about 6 minutes and 52 seconds. In 1985 Jon Hendricks wrote lyrics for the tune and Manhattan Transfer performed it as Sing Joy Spring on Vocalese. Since then Joy Spring has been widely covered by many artists.
