JuJu is a 1965 jazz album by American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, released in July 1965 on Blue Note. It was recorded on August 3, 1964 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and is Shorter's fifth leader date. The music blends post-bop, modal jazz, and hard bop. The rhythm section—pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Elvin Jones—had worked extensively with John Coltrane, giving the session a Coltrane-like edge. The six originals on the album are JuJu, Deluge, House of Jade, Mahjong, Yes or No, and Twelve More Bars to Go. The opening track JuJu alludes to West African beliefs in magic, while Mahjong carries an Eastern flavor and Yes or No leans into modal hard bop; Twelve More Bars to Go closes with bluesy looseness. After JuJu was completed, Shorter joined Miles Davis in September 1964 and later helped found Weather Report. A 1996 remastered CD adds bonus tracks with alternate takes of JuJu and House of Jade.
