La Javanaise is a 1963 chanson written by Serge Gainsbourg for Juliette Gréco and recorded and released by both artists as a 45 rpm single on Philips. Gainsbourg’s version was recorded in January 1963 in London and released in March, while Gréco’s version was recorded in April 1963 in Paris and released in May. The title is a pun on the Parisian java dance and the javanais argot, and the lyrics feature many unaltered French words containing the av sequence, giving the text an argot-like feel. Gréco debuted the song at the start of her La Tête de l'art cabaret tour in March 1963. The tune is classified as Chanson and has appeared in films, with Madeleine Peyroux’s 2006 recording used in The Shape of Water.
