Limbo is a jazz composition written by Wayne Shorter. It was first recorded in 1967 and released on Miles Davis’s Sorcerer album on October 23, 1967, with Miles Davis on trumpet, Shorter on tenor sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. The tune is simple and fun to play, and two famous versions—Miles Davis’s Quintet recording and a later Michel Petrucciani Power of Three interpretation with Jim Hall and Shorter—show how differently the same line can sound. A lead sheet for Limbo is available from Jazz Transcriptions. The piece marks Shorter’s contribution as composer and is part of the Miles Davis Quintet era of the late 1960s.
