Liza (All the Clouds'll Roll Away) is a jazz standard composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin and Gus Kahn. It was introduced in 1929 by Ruby Keeler in Florenz Ziegfeld’s musical Show Girl, with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the pit. On the show’s opening night in Boston, Al Jolson unexpectedly sang a chorus from the number, and he recorded it a few days later, reaching the charts. Over the years the song has been recorded by many artists and bands, including Jolson, Bing Crosby, Thelonious Monk, Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, and Herbie Hancock with Chick Corea, making it a lasting jazz standard. A notable pop culture moment is Django Reinhardt and Grappelli’s version used in the video game BioShock, and the tune is also linked to the name of Liza Minnelli.
